Petrified Wood
Bookends
|
BK407c
This is a very pretty set of Sequoia Petrified Wood bookends from Saddle Mountain,
Washington. This set of bookends shows the growth lines in the wood very
well and has a great polish. They are polished on one side with black felt in
the middle and bottom for protection. The set measures 5 3/4" tall and
9 1/4" wide and 1 3/4" thick. A nice gift that was once a living tree.
Petrified Wood is a type of a fossil as it consists of fossil wood where
all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the
original structure of the wood. These minerals are most often Silicates
such as Quartz. Other minerals, Manganese, Iron and Copper, in the water
or mud during the petrification process gives Petrified Wood a variety of color
ranges: black - Carbon; green/blue - Copper; red/brown/yellow - Iron.
Petrified Wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail
all the way down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings
and the various tissues are often observed features. Although Petrified
Wood can be found worldwide, it is rather rare in larger quantities and at times
can be difficult to obtain by the average collector.
The set weighs 6 lbs. 13 oz.

Birds Eye Rhyolite Bookends
|
BK410c
This is something different from the Rock Shed's gift department. Here
is an above average quality set of Bird's Eye Rhyolite bookends. This
material is from northern Mexico. The set measures 10 3/8" x 61/2" x over
3 1/4". Due to the nature of this material it does not have a high polish. This
material is a pretty Pink-Beige color with an interesting design throughout
the material.
Rhyolite is an igneous, volcanic rock that is composed of Felsic, or Silicate
minerals such as Silica, Aluminum, Sodium and Potassium. The material
is similar to that of Granite, Pumice and Obsidian but due to the cooling process
when formed, Rhyolite did not form any crystals, thus changing the texture of
the material.
This set weighs 8 lbs. 11 oz.

Geodes are geological rock formations which occur in sedimentary and certain
volcanic rocks. They are essentially rock cavities or vugs with internal
Crystal formations or concentric banding. The exterior is generally Limestone
while the interior contains Quartz Crystals and/or Chalcedony deposits.
If the Geode is completely filled with Crystal, being solid all the way through,
it is then called a nodule.
