Petrified Wood
Bookends
|
BK109b
This is a very pretty set of Petrified Wood bookends from Arizona. This
set of bookends shows the growth lines in the wood very well and has a great
polish. They are polished on one side with black felt in the middle and bottom
for protection. The set measures 9" x 7 1/2" x 2 1/8". Just beautiful!
The set weighs 9 lbs. 10 ozs.
$130.00
Petrified Wood is a type of a fossil as it consists of fossil wood where
all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the
original structure of the wood. These minerals are most often Silicates
such as Quartz. Other minerals, Manganese, Iron and Copper, in the water
or mud during the petrification process gives Petrified Wood a variety of color
ranges: black - Carbon; green/blue - Copper; red/brown/yellow - Iron.
Petrified Wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail
all the way down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings
and the various tissues are often observed features. Although Petrified
Wood can be found worldwide, it is rather rare in larger quantities and at times
can be difficult to obtain by the average collector.

Geisonoceras
Bookends
|
BK100c
Here is a very nice, above average quality set of spotted Black Geisonoceras
bookends. This set measures nearly 6 1/4" x 8 1/2" x 2" and has
a nice polish on the front, middle, top and side faces. The bookends have
been cut, carved and polished from Fossil Rock material to expose the very unique
fossils. This set has the Geisonoceras fossils exposed but also has the
Orthoceras in the background as well. This material is from Morocco. The
bookends make great decorator pieces as well as super collectibles for the fossil
hunter. Ammonites are an extinct group of marine animals of the subclass
Ammonoida in the class Cephalopoda, phylum Mollusca. They are excellent
index fossils which are fossils that are used to define and identify geologic
periods. Ammonites' closest living relative is probably not the modern
Nautilus (which they outwardly resemble) but rather the subclass Coleodiea,
which are octopus, squid and cuttlefish.
The set weighs 8 lbs. 6 ozs.

Geode bookends. They measure 7 1/2" x 5 5/8" x 4" with a nice polished

Septarians are commonly composed of a carbonate mineral such as Calcite,
a microcrystalline form of Silica as in Flint or Jasper, or an Iron Oxide such
as Hematite. These specimens are also known as a concretion which is a
type of sedimentary rock.
Septarians were formed millions of years ago by sediment forming around
a fossil to create a mud ball transforming the fossil into Calcite and Aragonite.
