Mini Penguin Carvings

Tiger-Eye is a gemstone that is usually yellow to red-brown in color with a silky luster.  This gemstone has an optical reflectance effect that arises from the fibrous structure of the material.  The physical and optical properties are identical or very near to those of a single Quartz Crystal.

Marble is a metamorphic rock consisting of Limestone but composed mostly of Calcite.  It is used extensively for sculpture, building materials and has many decorative uses.  The pure white Marble is probably the most common form known, but the characteristic swirls and veins of many colored Marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as Clay, Silt, Sand, Iron Oxides or Chert.

Jasper is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that is usually red, yellow or brown in color.  Jasper can appear as an opaque rock with shades of red due to mineral impurities.  Patterns can arise from the formation process and flow patterns in the sediment or volcanic ash that was saturated with silica which formed the banding or swirling designs in the rock.

Jasper, or spotted stone, is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that is usually red, yellow or brown in color.  Picture Jaspers simultaneously exhibit several variants such as banding, flow patterns, dendrites or color variations.  This results in what appears to be scenes or images in a cut section of the Jasper.

Rose Quartz is a type of Quartz which exhibits a pale pink to rose red hue.  The color is usually considered as due to trace amounts of Titanium, Iron or Manganese, in the massive material.  Some Rose Quartz contains microscopic Rutile needles which produce an asterism in transmitted light.

Aventurine is a form of Quartz that is characterized by its translucent and mineral inclusions that give it a shimmering or glistening effect called "aventurescence".  The most common color is green but it may also be orange, brown, yellow, blue or grey.

Unakite is an altered Granite composed of pink Feldspar, green Epidote and clear Quartz.  It exists in various shades of green and pink and is usually mottled in appearance.  Good quality Unakite is considered a semiprecious stone and will take a good polish and is often used in jewelry and other lapidary work such as eggs, spheres and carvings.

C205b  This is a nice set of carved Turtles made from Dendritic Rhyolite.  The carving measures 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 1 1/2" with a natural finish.  Each Turtle measures 2 1/8" x 1 1/4" and has nice design and detail.  A very nice conversation piece for your desk or table.

C222b  This is a nice mixed set of four (4) carved mini Turtles, Fish, Frogs and Dolphins made from different gemstones.  They are carved from  Sodalite, Opalite, Green Aventurine, Quartz Crystal, Hematite, Rose Quartz or Gold Tiger-Eye. Each carving measures approximately 3/4" to 1" depending on the type of carving.  These little guys are super cute and very detailed.

C203c  This is a nice carved Frog made from Pink, White and Grey Rhodenite.  She measures 1 1/2" x 2" and has a nice polish.  This Frog is a super cute carving that would add to any collection.

Rhodenite is a Manganese Silicate material that is commonly a rose-red color with a tendency to turn brown due to surface oxidation.  It is often worked as an ornamental stone as true Crystals are rare to find.

Hematite is a mineral form of Iron oxide.  It is a very common material that has a black to steel to silver-grey color and may also appear reddish brown.  Hematite is a heavy metal and when it is polished it is consider to many to be of gemstone quality.  It is very popular in jewelry and Native American art.

Howlite is a soft and sometimes brittle gemstone.  It is usually white or colorless.  It can be translucent in thin fragments.  It is associated with Colemanite, Ulexite, and Bakerite and is found in Borate deposits.  It is usually dyed to simulate real "Turquoise" in jewelry.

Dalmatian Stone, or orbicular Rhyolite, is an igneous rock that was formed by lava flows on the Earth's surface.  The spots or "orbs" probably occurred when molten lava reacted with fragments of rock known as Xenoliths.  These stones are light to dark tan in color with black spots throughout.  The nickname "Dalmatian" was given to this unusual looking mineral because of its resemblance to a Dalmatian dog's spots.

C209b   This is a nice carved Eagle make from Picture Jasper.  He measures 2 1/4" x 1 and has a nice polish.  This Eagle has a nice design and pattern and would sit nicely atop your computer or on your desk.

C206b   This is a nice carved Frog made from Mahogany Obsidian.  It measures 2" in length by 1 1/2" in width. He is has a pretty Brown and Black mix of colors and a neat design.  Take him home quick before he hops away.

Obsidian is a rock which is a type of naturally occurring glass that is produced by volcanoes when felsic lava cools rapidly and freezes without sufficient time for Crystal growth.  It is an extrusive igneous rock.  Because Obsidian lacks Crystal structure, the blade edges can reach almost molecular thinness, leading to the ancient use of arrow heads and the modern use of surgical scalpel blades.

C201c   Here is a real nice Pegasus carved from Rose Quartz.  This unique carving measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/4" and has a nice polish.  The Pegasus has a nice soft Pink color.  He would make a nice little pocket charm or a great addition for the carving collector.
