Mexican Red Jasper

This is Red Jasper from Mexico.  It is will vary in color from Purple, Brown and Beige in color.  It will polish nicely and the pieces measure form approximately 3/4" to 2" in size.  It is great for the rock tumbler or use it just as is for fountains or other decorative uses.  A great rock at a great price.

Sea Jasper

This is an old favorite item back in stock at the Rock Shed.  This is crushed Leopard skin Jasper from Brazil.  This is one of the oldest known gemstones and has a good color mix. Tiger Eye

After a long awaited return, the Tiger Eye is back at the Rock Shed!!  This is a new batch, of a more beautiful than ever, crushed Gold Tiger Eye from South Africa.  These sparkling specimens measure approximately 3/4" up to 2" and have some Blue and Red accents.  The rock has a rich Gold color and lots of shiny chatoyance, or cat-eye effects.  A super great rock for the super great lapidary artist.

Amazonite

Apache Tears

These are Apache Tears from 3/8" to 1" in size.  Although somewhat more difficult to polish than the harder stones like agates, Apache Tears make a very pretty tumbled stone. 

Apache Tears will polish best by not mixing with other types of stone and using an additional step with 1000 grit Aluminum Oxide.  In a rotary tumbler, use plastic pellets to cushion them in the last three finish steps.  If you are using a vibrating tumbler, use ceramic media with them in the last three steps for best results.

Fluorite

Howlite

Here is some very nice, above average quality White and Grey Howlite.  This crushed rock comes in sizes from 3/4" to 1 1/2" and is ready for your tumbler, fountain, aquarium or rock garden.  This material will grind quicker than most harder rock and would best be tumbled by itself.  It is White in color with Grey accents that weave in and out for a very interesting, intricate design.  A must have for any rock hound.

Large Howlite

Small Colored Glass

Here is something new and different from the crushed rock department at the Rock Shed.  This is a very beautiful batch of crushed Glass.  The pieces range in size from 1/2" to 1 1/4" and each has a very unique design and color all its own. 

Glass will polish best by not mixing with other types of stone and using an additional step with 1000 grit Aluminum Oxide.  In a rotary tumbler, use plastic pellets to cushion them in the last three finish steps.  If you are using a vibrating tumbler, use ceramic media with them in the last three steps for best results.

Note: Use caution with this material as it may have sharp edges until it is polished.

Another photo - shows a batch of glass we polished in our Lortone QT12 Tumbler   These are the steps we used in our Lortone QT12 Tumbler: 

1.  120/220 Aluminum Oxide for 5 days for the first grind.  We checked for shape at 4 days and suggest running another day if needed to get the desired shape.

2.  500 Aluminum Oxide for 4 days.   We used small ceramic media in the last 3 steps.

3.  1000 Aluminum Oxide for 3 days.

4.  Aluminum Oxide Polish for 3 days.

 Agate

Mexican Trias Agate

This is a new item here at the Rock Shed.  These are uncut Mexican Trias Agates from Mexico from 1 1/4" to over 3" in diameter.  These nodules are great for cutting as some will have some awesome agates inside.  Others will be Quartzy nodules and others yet will be duds.  We cut some nodules in our lapidary department and the results are shown in linked pictures below.  As shown, there are very nice agates,  the Quartzy nodules and a dud; the one at the top in picture of cut nodules.  There is no way of knowing if the nodules you will receive are agates,  Quartzy nodules or duds. 

For reference, the uncut Trias Agates shown in the picture to the left weighed 4 1/2 pounds.  A one pound order may include as few as two nodules.

We are excited to add these Botswana agates in a mix of both Salmon or Pink and Blue to our selection of tumbling materials.  Rough Botswana agates are hard to find these days due to customs policies to be cut or polished in some way before leaving Africa.  These agates are from an old collection and are ready tumbling, cutting, cabbing or simply collecting.  Some of them are whole which likely have beautiful banding in the center and many are broken pieces that already show their beautiful colors.  They range is size from 3/4" to 1 1/2" which make for great mix of sizes for any tumbler.

Blue Botswana Agate

Carnelian Agate Nodules

Brazilian Agate

This is something different for the "Rock Hound" from the crushed rock department at the Rock Shed.  Here is a very beautiful batch of above average quality, crushed Brazilian Agate.  These pieces range in size from 3/4" to 1 1/2" and each has a very unique design and color all its own.  This is great rock for the tumbler or use it just as is for fountains or other decorative uses.   This material has a super range of agate colors with some having natural cavities and banding for good character and appearance.

dyed braz agate

Dyed Brazilian Agate

This is something different to The Rock Shed's crushed rock section, dyed Brazilian Agate. The rock pieces will be approximately 3/4" to 1 3/4".  Each bag will have a mix of color enhanced blue, pink, purple, and teal dyed Brazilian Agate. Please note that some of the pieces did not take dye all the way through therefore the final polished stone may have a more natural Brazilian Agate appearance. Many stones will end up with a good mix of color enhanced and natural look. 

It is possible that small amounts of dye may come off when initially handling the material when wet. The final product will not have this problem.

MOHS hardness scale of  6.5-7

Agates mostly occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or waters containing Silica in solution which is possibly derived from the decomposition of Silicates in the lava.  The Siliceous matter is deposited in regular layers resulting in the banded or striped formation.  It is very unlikely that you would ever find an exact duplicate of any type of Agate, Fairburn or other.

Jasper, also known as spotted stone, is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that is usually red, yellow or brown in color.  The mineral breaks with a smooth surface and is used for ornamentation or as a gemstone.  It can be highly polished and is used for vases, seals, and other decorative items
