The lamp is lightweight and small enough to fit into a pocket. Shortwave light is the ultraviolet energy farthest from visible light, shorter than rays in sunlight, and primarily noted for its ability to fluoresce minerals for chemical analysis.

Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation in the part of the spectrum between x-rays and visible light, approximately 180nm to 400 nm.  It differs from light only that its wavelengths are too short to be seen by the human eye.

When UV radiation falls upon phosphors, it causes the phosphors to emit specific radiation.  This phenomenon is known as fluorescence.  In some materials, the fluorescence linger on and slowly disappears after the UV source is removed.  This phenomenon is known as phosphorescence.

Caution:  Do not expose eyes or skin to shortwave ultraviolet light as rays may burn unprotected eyes or skin.  UV Blocking Eyewear is recommended.

Hand Held Ultraviolet Lamp - SW & LW

$80.00 M1006b   Here is a 51-LED flashlight which emits longwave ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 385nm. These field tested UV mineral-quality flashlights come with a professional grade filter to block white (visible) light (also emitted from the LEDís), which otherwise would make it difficult to see the fluorescent reactions. The flashlight comes ready to use with 3 "AA" batteries and a nylon holster which can be attached to the belt.  It measures 5 3/4" long x 2 1/4" in diameter.

This light is powerful enough to make long-wave reacting gems & minerals fluoresce even in normal room lighting so it is very convenient for finding long wave fluorescent minerals without being in the dark!

Some other uses for this light are:

In dark conditions, some insects, especially scorpions, glow green when illuminated by UV light.

Antique dealers can detect repairs to suspect items.  Glues usually show brightly in the long-wave UV light. 

Artifact collectors can identify reworked parts on arrow & spear points made of flint.  Recent chipping on Texas chert shows a brighter reaction than weathered & old flaking.

These flashlights will reveal all special fluorescent markings on recent US paper currency of $5 or greater. 

Most credit cards & other forms of ID have authentication markings which can be revealed under long-wave UV light.

Privacy markings made with special permanent ink pens such as the Sanford Security Marker can be revealed with these lights as well.
