Copper is a reddish colored metal with a high electrical and
thermal conductivity. It has its characteristic color because it reflects
red and orange light and absorbs other frequencies in the visible spectrum
due to its band structure. It is in the same family as Silver and Gold and
is a malleable metal. It is beautiful natural or polished.

Agates mostly occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or
waters containing Silica in solution which is possibly derived from the
decomposition of Silicates in the lava. The Siliceous matter is deposited
in regular layers resulting in the banded or striped formation. It is
very unlikely that you would ever find an exact duplicate of any
type of Agate, Fairburn or other. |

This
material is a new find from Madagascar. The deposit formed as a rhyolite flow
but has been completely silicified. The Rhyolitic eyes or orbs come in an
astonishing array of colors and color combinations. The back ground can be
white, pink, green, red, or yellow. Botryoidal formations as well as white
and deep green druzy are also common. This deposit has been discovered at
the edge of the ocean. It can only be seen and collected at low tide. The
area has no road so the material must be transported to civilization by boat.
This material is fast becoming a rarity in the Jasper ocean fields, so get
one while it is still available.

Jasper, or spotted stone, is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that
is usually red, yellow or brown in color. Some Jaspers simultaneously
exhibit several variants such as banding, flow patterns, dendrites or color
variations. This results in what appears to be scenes or images in a
cut section of the Jasper.

SP504c Here
is an exceptional Amazonite sphere. It measures 3 3/4" in
diameter and has a good polish. This pretty sphere has pretty Turquoise
colors with light colored highlights and some iridescence with an
interesting layering pattern. It does have some healed fractures and
lines which is common for this material but it does not distract from the
beauty of this sphere nor the stability. A really nice sphere!

Amazonite is a green variety of Feldspar. The name is taken from
that of the Amazon River, from which certain green stones were formerly
obtained, but it is doubtful whether green Feldspar occurs in the Amazon
area. It is a mineral of limited occurrence but is often associated with
smoky Quartz, Orthoclase and Albite in a coarse Granite or Pegmatite.
Because of its bright green color when polished, Amazonite is sometimes
cut and used as a gemstone, although it is easily fractured. |

Petrified Wood is a type of a fossil as it consists of
fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with
minerals while retaining the original structure of the wood. These
minerals are most often Silicates such as Quartz. Other minerals,
Manganese, Iron and Copper, in the water or mud during the petrification
process gives Petrified Wood a variety of color ranges: black - Carbon;
green/blue - Copper; red/brown/yellow - Iron. Petrified Wood can preserve
the original structure of the wood in all its detail all the way down to
the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings and the various
tissues are often observed features. Although Petrified Wood can be found
worldwide, it is rather rare in larger quantities and at times can be
difficult to obtain by the average collector.

Chiastolite is a variety of the mineral andalusite
with the chemical composition Al2SiO5. It is noted for distinctive
cross-shaped black inclusions of graphite. The presence of the cross
caused this mineral be used as a gem. Chiastolite specimens were
distributed throughout Europe from the 16th century, as an amulet or
souvenir provided by the pilgrims returning from Santiago de Compostela
(Saint James of Compostella), in Spain. In the old books of mineralogy,
chiastolite appears it is cited with the name of lapis crucifer or lapis
cruciatur, cross stone. The first figure of a chiastolite appears in
Laet's book, De Gemmis et Lapidibus, published in 1648.[1] The quiastolite
specimens sold to the pilgrims came from Asturias, where it is very
abundant, in large specimens, in the area of Boal.
In areas around
Georgetown, California, metamorphosed sediments contained andalusite and
chiastolite in a graphite rich metasediment. The chiastolite crystals have
been pseudomorphically altered by a mixture of muscovite, paragonite and
margarite. The calcium rich margarite tends to form along the graphite
rich crosses or bands within the chiastolite. Mineralogically the
occurrence is important because all three white mica phases are present in
an equilibrium assemblage.
There are several theories regarding the
formation of the chiastolite cross, however the most widely accepted
theory, proposed by Frondel in 1934, suggests that there is a selective
attachment of impurities at the rapidly growing corners of andalusite
crystals. As the concentration of these impurities (which consist
primarily of graphite) increases, the growth of the crystal is slowed.
This concentrated impurity deposit forms a re-entrant as it is absorbed by
the growth of the andalusite porphyroblast. The cycle of
growth-retardation-growth then repeats itself, creating a featherlike
pattern of graphite along four radiating 'arms.

Calcite is a Carbonate mineral that is most widely distributed on the
Earth's surface. It is a common constituent of sedimentary rocks with
Limestone in particular. A Calcite formation can take on many different
shapes and sizes which is dependent on the location, ground water occurrence
and temperature. Calcite is usually white or colorless but can be gray,
red, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown or black. The deeper the color
is usually indicative of the definitive impurities from the earth or water.
